The final match of the Latvian-Estonian league, where our “Prometey” played against “VEF Riga”, was a great advertisement for the league as the current winner of the regular season and the team that defended its title opposed each other. Besides that, the decisive match turned into a kind of Riga derby as Riga, which has been represented by VEF for dozens of years, became a home city for “Prometey”. In the seasonal series, with a score of 2:0, the best Ukrainian club led. On this basis, the team could be considered a favourite, but at the same time, draw attention to the fact that in both matches the team from Riga looked like a competitive opponent.
The same situation was on the court of “Unibet Arena” Tallinn. First two minutes of the match, the teams twice successfully attacked from the arc (Ivan Tkachenko, Illia Sydorov and twice byKristers Zoriks). This start set the tone of the match. In the starting quarter, both opponent succeeded in three-point shots – “VEF” had 66% of accuracy and “Prometey” had 55%. As a result, this ten-minute segment finished with a minimal advantage of “VEF” – 21:20.
The start of the second quarter was successful for Latvian club, which even broke away by 5 points, however, in the 14th minute Issuf Sanon helped to take the lead for "Prometey" back with an excellent individual drive (28:27). Two minutes after Issuf hit from the perimeter, the advantage of the "titans" reached 5 points. Before the long break, "red and white" did not lose their lead and went for the break with a more or less comfortable handicap of “+7”.
In the second half of the match, spectators finally saw the real “Prometey”, powerful and dominant! On the halfway of the third quarter, Ronen Gingburg’s squad doubled their advantage, after which, at some point, it reached the mark of two dozen of points.
Our team totally controlled the game, which was really the champions’ one. “Prometey” by rights became the best team of the league, as they looked better than their opponents all the season long. Only some of them managed to face our team on an equal footing in some matches.
