The European Basketball Federation (FIBA) has released an updated rating of the strength of the Champions League. Its compilers especially emphasize that they take into account not only the current performances of the teams in the tournament, but also in their national championships. That is why, for example, one of the rivals of Ronen Ginzburg's team in the group "K" of the Champions League "Uniqaja", which plays quite mediocre in the Spanish league DIA, could reach only 9th place.
According to experts, the current champion of Ukraine "Prometey" occupies the third position in it. Only Spanish "Tenerife" - the winner of the League in 2017, and the future rival in the top 16 group "Cluj-Napoca" from Romania is ahead of team from Slobozhanske.
The compilers of the rating explained their choice of our team as follows:
“Imagine being up against Prometey. You stop D'Angelo Harrison. You stop Chris Dowe. You stop the DJs, Kennedy and Stephens. And you're thinking "surely that's it, we get a win now" just to be slapped by Miro Bilan's 38-point outburst... BCL season-high in points, BCL season-high in efficiency (46), second-best BCL game of all time in efficiency, trailing only Steven Gray, who had 47 for Peristeri against Rytas Vilnius last season. Miro, the fourth fortress of Sibenik. Short for Miracle Bilan. Crazy how talented of a squad the champs of Ukraine put together.”
It will be recalled that Prometey advanced to the play-in from the third place of the group stage, and then, in three matches, they snatched victory from the powerful Israeli Hapoel Jerusalem.
In the group of top 16 "Prometey" started with victories against the Spanish "Unicaja" (70:69) and the Belgian "Oostende" (91:87). The Red and Whites are currently the second ones in the group.
In the next match on March 3, Prometey will play against Cluj-Napoca, which leads the group.
