Already tomorrow, on July 8, "Prometey" will find out about their opponents in the EuroCup. Our team has not participated yet in a tournament of such status, which is held under the auspices of the Euroleague.
The EuroCup ranks second in the European basketball hierarchy. Victory in it guarantees participation in the next draw of the Euroleague. The tournament started in the 2002/2003 season after the merger of the Saporta Cup and the Korach Cup in 2002. The record holder for the number of victories in the tournament is Spanish "Valencia" - 4. The last winner of the EuroCup was Italian "Virtus" from Bologna. In the final, the Italian team defeated Turkish "Bursaspor" with a score of 80:67.
For many years, the EuroCup was held according to the following formula: the main round of ten tours (four groups of six teams each), the Top-16 stage (four groups of four teams each) and play-offs, starting with the quarterfinals. It consisted of mini-series until two victories of any team. Last season, 20 teams were divided into 2 groups, and play-offs started with the 1/8 finals and consisted of one match.
The history of Ukrainian clubs' relations with the EuroCup is quite long - "Azovmash", "Kyiv", "Donetsk" and "Khimik" played here with varied success in different years. And the best result belongs to "Budivelnyk": in the 2012/2013 season, the capital team reached the semi-finals, where they lost to the Spanish "Bilbao".
That is, the last time the Ukrainian team participated in the EuroCup was ten years ago! And so, in the new 2022/2023 season, "Prometey" returns our country to one of the most prestigious European tournaments. We wish our team, just like last year, to represent the entire Ukrainian club basketball with dignity, but now in a more prestigious tournament!
