Tomorrow, on November 29, “Prometey” will cap its programme of the BKT Eurocap regular season first tour with a clash in Spanish Badalona against local “Joventut”.
Among all group A participants, “Joventut” has no equals in terms of traditions and titles won at the European arena. The club from Badalona is the 4-time Spanish champion (1967, 1978, 1991, 1992), also the “green-and-black” won the Spanish Cup for 8 times.
According to the European standards, “Joventut” is also a titled club. In the 1980/1981 and 1989/1990 seasons, the club won the FIBA Korac Cup, the third prestigious tournament at the time. In 1994, “Joventut” conquered the main club pick of the European basketball – Champions Cup (currently – the Euroleague). Having defeated in the final Greek “Olympiakos” (59:57), “Joventut” became the second Spanish team after “Real” to win this tournament. The success at the Euroarena also did not pass by the rival of “Prometey” in the new millennium: in 2006, the team won the EuroChallenge FIBA (now – EuroCup FIBA), and two years later – the ULEB EuroCup (now – BKT EuroCup).
However, “Joventut” is recently facing not the best times. Several players at once, who largely determined its playing features – Kyle Guy, Joel Parra, Henry Ellenson, left the club during the off-season. A new version of “Joventut” is still fare from the desirable one by the club fans. Currently, the team from Badalona is out of the playoffs zone in both Spanish championship and BKT EuroCup. In both tournaments, Carles Duran’s team is just one step from there.
In the EuroCup, “Joventut” is one win behind “Prometey” and Lithuanian “Wolves Vilnius”. It means, tomorrow’s match is of great importance for both opponents. In case of their success, the “titans” will secure the place in the playoffs zone whereas defeat will throw them out of the coveted top-six.
That goes without saying that “Prometey” is awaited by a very serious challenge. On the eve of the confrontation, the head coach of our team noted the back line of our rival. “Joventut” players willingly attack opponent’s rim from behind the arc. In the two last matches, including additional time in the clash against “Paris basketball”, the Spaniards made 70 long-range shots. It worth noting, that in the match against “Hapoel Tel Aviv”, their accuracy was over 50%.
At the same time, there are also enough drawbacks in the “Joventut” performance. If “Prometey” manages to use them tomorrow, its chances for the crucially important win will rise significantly.
