On December 20 and 21, a programme of the 7DAYS EuroCup first round in Group A will finish. “Prometey” will come out to the intermidiate finish of the group round with a road match against Italian club “Umana Reyer Venice”.
The nearest rival of our team is a club with almost 100-year history (was founded in 1925). In the middle 90s it suffered the procedure of bankruptcy, then played in the low Italian divisions, but it has already been playing in the elite series A of Italian basketball for 10 years.
“Reyer Venice” is one of the most titled opponent of “Prometey” in the EuroCup Group A. In 2016/2017 and 2018/2019 seasons, the team twice won the Italian championship, and in 2020 they won the National Cup. In-between its two champion’s titles, the representative of the one of the world’s most beautiful cities wot the FIBA EuroCup defeated in the final series their compatriots from “Avelino” twice.
In 2019/2020 “covid” season, “Venice” perfectly debuted in the 7DAYS EuroCup. In the first group round, it sat in first place; in the following round – in second place, however, due to pandemic, the tournament was ended early.
In the ongoing 7DAYS EuroCap tournament, after 8 tours, “Prometey’s” opponent, with 5 wins in 8 matches, is in the group of three teams, which has just one success less than the leader- French “Bourg”. Herewith, the Italians started the tournament with two losses: from German “Ulm” and French “Bourg”. But then they performed an impressive victorious series of 5 matches, which was interrupted last week by Spanish “Joventut”. A confrontation in Badalona turned out to be dramatic. Both opponents had equal rights for success. Three seconds before the final siren, with the score of 87:84 in favour of the hosts of the court, a point guard of “Reyer Venice” and Italian national team Marco Spissu hit the rim for overtime, however, their opponent managed to respond with the similar hit by American Henry Ellenson. This incredible throw allowed “Joventut” to win the match 90:87.
As for Marco Spissu, he became the most productive player of the match wit 27 points. Marco also outstood with his productiveness in the play-off of the last EuroBasket for his national team. In 1/8 final, against Serbia, he scored 22 points; in the quarterfinal against France he scored 21 points. Earlier, in the confrontation against Ukrainian national team he sparkled with 11 points. There is no need to say that Spissu is one of the “Reyer Venice” leaders. At the same time, his colleagues Jayson Granger and Allerik Freeman, bigmen Derek Willis and Mitchell Watt, Amadeo Tessitori (another “Reyer Venice” representative in the Italian national team) can always support him. Although, Amadeo recently hasn’t had much playing time.
On the eve of the confrontation in Venice, the head coach of “Prometey” Ronen Ginzburg also noted the presence of a sufficient number of high-class players and the balance between the lines in the opponent’s team. These factors are saying in favour of the fact that the defeat of Italian club in the last 7DAYS EuroCup match in Spanish Badalona shouldn’t mislead us: tomorrow, “Prometey” will have to face another serious challenge at the European arena. Let’s hope that our guys will withstand it with honour and finish the half of EuroCup distance with positive feelings!
