The programme of the BKT EuroCup second tour in Group A will be opened with a duel in Istanbul, Turkey where our Prometey will oppose the local Besiktas. Both rivals are approaching the upcoming match in a positive humour, winning their openers a week ago.
Herewith, the success of the two-time champion of Turkey (1975 and 2012) in Badalona, Spain in the confrontation with the local Joventut turned out to be rather unexpected. Even so, Besiktas minimally outpaced the eminent opponent (63:62) and its advantage in some stats figures looked logical. Turkish club surpassed its rival in the fight under the glass (41 rebounds vs 35), was stronger in the offence creation (19 assists vs 15) was more well-aimed from the perimeter.
In the course of the game against Joventut, unfortunately for Besiktas’s fans, the team’s guard Derek Needham, well known to Ukrainian fans, got an injury. In the 2014/2015 season, together with current Prometey players Illia Sydorov, Oleksandr Belikov and Viacheslav Petrov, he won the championship of Ukraine as part of Khimik, Yuzhne, in addition becoming the Superleague MVP. Derek was not able to participate in the last Besiktas’s match in the championship of Turkey against Tofas (69:54 in favour of the nearest Prometey rival). Instead, American forward Matt Mitchell, who missed the match against Joventut because of an injury, retrieved in the main team.
Tomorrow, Prometey awaits an extremely challenging confrontation. In the off-season, 37-year-old Serbian specialist Dusan Alimpijevic, perfectly known to Prometey fans for the last year’s matches against Bursaspor, led Besiktas.
Dusan Alimpijevic moved to Istanbul together with his coaching staff, which includes Ukrainian specialist Dmytro Boldaiev who is building up an organised game in the new club, first of all, in defence. In each of three official matches of the season (two in the Turkish championship and one in the EuroCup), Besiktas missed less than 65 (!) points. At the same time, Prometey is strong precisely with its offence, which was proved at the start of the BKT EuroCup regular season. So tomorrow, it will be exciting to watch which of two game strategies will turn out to be dominating.
