Tomorrow, on March 12, the BKT EuroCup quarterfinal stage opens with the match between the French "Bourg" and our "Prometey".
The closest rival of the "titans" represents French city and municipality of Bourg-en-Bresse, located in the Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes region, the administrative center of the department with a population of about 41,000 people. The municipality is located at about 370 km distance southeast of Paris and 60 km northeast of Lyon.
The team of local specialist Frederic Fauthoux is writing its own history right now, at least in the EuroCup (in the French championship, it is currently in 3rd place, with a 17-7 balance). "Bourg" is participating in the tournament for the fourth time, and in the three previous seasons it did not achieve any success. In the 2020/2021 season, they made it to the second group stage, but lost all 6 matches there. In the last year's EuroCup, "Bourg" and "Prometey" played in the same group. Ronen Ginzburg's team won it in brilliant style, but the French club took 5th place. In the 1/8 finals, they lost to Greek "Promitheas", which at the next stage lost in all respects... to our "Prometey".
Tomorrow's match between the teams will be the third one for "Bourg" and "Prometey" in the history of their head-to-head relations. In the same group round of the 2022/2023 season, they exchanged home victories, and success came to “Bourg” in overtime. This season, French team won their group with a 14-4 balance, which gave them the right, firstly, to avoid a match at the first playoff stage, and secondly, to play in tomorrow's match as the hosting team.
On the eve of the match, “Prometey” head coach Ronen Ginzburg particularly emphasized that the opponent has become much stronger over the year: "Their team has changed a lot. They kept just 3-4 players. And now, they have 13 very good basketball players in their roster. This is an athletic team that has at its disposal good shooters and, in general, a lot of high-quality performers.
"Burg" came first in its group. So, of course, they are considering as the favourite in our confrontation. However, this is one game. Anything may happen”.
In the last month, the rival of "Prometey" performed rather unstable. The home victory of the French championship over the representative of the Euroleague team "Monaco" was replaced a little later by a sensitive defeat against another participant of the prestigious continental club tournament - ASVEL. In their last official match, which took place on March 9, "Bourg" - again in the national championship - lost at home to "Shole" by one possession.
Perhaps, based on the fact that tomorrow's opponents played differently in the group stage of the EuroCup and taking into account the factor of the home arena, some specialists will favour “Bourg”. However, "Prometey" has now gained such momentum that it also has excellent chances to repeat its last year's achievement - reaching the semi-finals of the tournament.
