Two matches at once were planned for the second day of another EYBL tour. Firstly, our team played against Latvian club BC “Riga/LU”. Coaches of the LEBL club “Latvijas Universitate” Edijs Slesers and Gunars Gailitis keep young players of this team “in pencil”. At the same time, Gailitis leads “Latvijas Unuversitate” and Slesers is his assistant; at the contrary, in the coaching staff of today’s opponent of our youth, these mentors do the opposite functions. Regarding players of BC “Riga”, many of them included to the “Latvijas Universitate” application for this season.
The fact that “Prometey” youth will have difficulties with the representative of Latvian capital city became clear yet in the debut of the confrontation. In the first 5-minute segment, our team established their leadership (9:4), however, later guys lost concentration. It led to an opponent’s jerk 8:0, which allowed them to take a lead.
Olrksandr Pashchenko’s squad took the lead back quite quickly. The opponents, in many episodes, could not cope with fast basketball of our guys and their confident play on the boards, including the opponent’s one. “Prometey” won both 8-minute segments (that’s the duration of each quarter according to the tournament regulations), and before the long break, Mykhailo Bublyk with an accurate throw from the perimeter, established a handicap of his team at “+11” mark.
In the third quarter, “Riga/LU” managed to demonstrate both team game and individual skills of the players. During the course of the quarter, the team from Riga reduced their lag to 2 points and deservedly won this 8-minute segment. But in the final quarter, “Prometey” significantly improved their play in defense. For almost 4 minutes, our team did not let the hosts of the court to hit the hoop, instead, increased own advantage to 13 points (62:49). To some extent, this successful for Ukrainians game segment defined the victorious result for them. In last minutes, players of BC “Riga” applied an active pressing. That allowed them to cut their lag in half, although it was already impossible to save the match.
“Prometey” attained the second victory in the tournament, this time, with the score of 62:56. Already at 18:00, our team plays against Estonian club “Reinar Halliku Korvpallikool/Vinni”
