Ukrainians at the EuroCup: two titles and one record

Українці в Єврокубку: два титули і один рекорд

As you know, this season "Prometey" will debut in the second in terms of status European tournament. Victory in the EuroCup guarantees participation in the next draw of the Euroleague. Let us remind, in a recent interview, our newcomer Gian Clavell admitted that he wants to win the EuroCup and lead the team to the most prestigious club competition of the Old World.

The Eurocup celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, as its first season began in 2002, when the Saporta Cup and the Korač Cup merged.

During two decades, 14 clubs obtained the title, three clubs became champions more than once. "Valencia" has the biggest number of cups - four, two of them with one of the best Ukrainian basketball players, Serhiy Lishchuk, who is currently the president of the basketball club "Rivne".

The EuroCup record holder in terms of scored points is the captain of "Valencia" Boyan Dublevich (1217 points). And Ihor Rakocevich scored the most in average per game.

It is interesting that a Ukrainian team directly took part in one of the EuroCup records. 24 232 spectators came to Kombank Arena for the game "Crvena Zvezda" - "Budivelnyk". This is a record for the EuroCup and any indoor basketball match in Europe. This is also the attendance record for the Belgrade Arena. "Zvezda" then won in overtime with a score of 79:70.

And the highest sport achievement of the Ukrainian teams in the tournament also belongs to "Budivelnyk" - in the 2012/2013 season, the Kyiv team reached the semi-finals, where they lost to the Spanish "Bilbao". BC "Kyiv", "Azovmash", "Donetsk" and "Khimik" also played in the tournament in different years.

From the 2012–13 season, all EuroCup clubs must play their home games in arenas with a capacity of at least 2 500 (all seats) and an additional minimum capacity of 200 VIP seats. In comparison, EuroLeague-licensed clubs play their home games in arenas with a capacity of at least 10 000, while EuroLeague associated clubs must have venues with a capacity of 5,000. As a reminder, "Prometey" will host rivals at the Riga Arena, which can accommodate 11 000 spectators.
